Responsive logos – The Future of Digital Branding

Responsive logo is the name given to a logotype that is designed in such a way that it remains memorable and easy to recognize no matter how small it gets. The logo will vary slightly with size, but it always conveys the message and brand image/slogan it is meant to promote.

Responsive logos a relatively new concept and the need for them has grown with the change in the digital environment. Unlike in the past, the logos now need to be scaled for large screens/displays and small ones. A lot of engineering and design go into a responsive logo design.

Some examples of responsive logos from famous brands are:

  • Heineken
  • Warner Bros Pictures
  • Victorinox
  • Kodak
  • Guinness
  • Levi’s
  • Walt Disney
  • Bang and Olufsen
  • Lacoste
  • Heinz
  • Aston Martin
  • New Balance
  • MTV
  • Nike Air
  • Channel
  • Coca Cola

The Need for Responsive logos

A website visitor usually decides within the first 15 seconds whether or not they’ll be spending more time on it. These 15 seconds are crucial, and you don’t want the visitors to see a logo that takes up the majority of the space on the page. The solution to this problem is a smarter, smaller logo that conveys your brand name without taking too much space on the page. This, however, can’t be done by simply resizing the logo because it won’t be understandable in a very small size. Responsive logos adopt different form factors when shown in smaller sizes than they do in the full size. A good responsive logo is visible and understandable and conveys the brand name even when displayed as a 16×16 pixel icon on a browser tab.

Conveying Brand Image in all sizes

A responsive logo needs to have the same feel to it no matter what the size. If a logo has a mark of its own, like Nike, Channel, Lacoste, it is easier to scale it down for smaller sizes but, doing the same with logos having something written in them is a technical task.

How to make a Responsive Logo?

Making a responsive log is a technical task that requires the attention of a trained and experienced professional in the field. You can have a make-shift arrangement by adding certain code snippets to your website or app but to make a logo that is truly responsive, a graphics designer needs to make different logo designs for all sizes. For example, if you see the logo of Warner Bros Pictures in full size, the words “Warner Bros Pictures” are written clearly in the center but if you see the same logo in a small size, it does not have those words and only has the monogram of the company. A logo designer looks into all the aspects of the logo and designs suitable ones for every size and scenario.
